Here's what I'll wear for my first sermon.
You all know I have been working on my ordination paper for the Cumberland Association of Free Will Baptists here in middle Tennessee. It took me over 2 months, but I finished it. The presbytery board questioned me for about 50 minutes a few Fridays ago, and recommended me for ordination to the body there. They then recommended me as a body to my church, Cofer’s Chapel, who will be ordaining me for gospel ministry this Sunday night, April 29.
I am looking forward to the service. I picked out some great songs that my friend Russell will be leading (“By Faith,” “Speak O Lord,” “Psalm 62″). My Dad will be preaching, my brother Jeremy will be reading some passages from 1 Timothy, and Pastor Mike will be giving the charge and doing a Bible presentation.
The thing I am not looking forward to is people calling me “Reverend Jacob.” Jenny Hawkins, our church secretary, was beaming with excitement about calling me that. Please, people, I will not preach your funeral if you call me that. Nor will I marry you or your children!
Anyway, if you’d like to come out on Sunday night, feel free. It starts at 6 at Cofer’s.

Congrats, Jacob. And don’t worry, people will catch on pretty quick to calling you what you want to be called. I am just Stan to most of my folks; those who need a title tack on a “brother”. If someone says Rev., I am sure they don’t know me. “What” they call you may not be as big a problem as “when” they call you.
